Curatorial Text

“từ đô” is a typography exhibition exploring the city's essence. Its title plays on a dual meaning—“from the city” and “word + city”—highlighting the dynamic interplay between typography and the urban environment it represents.

This exhibition features creative projects by students of RMIT Vietnam Type & Design, representing both the Digital Media and Design Studies programs. Their work explore the intersection of experimental typography and urban narratives, guided by the decolonization of traditional Western-driven typography pedagogy. In this exhibition, students have drawn inspiration from the subtle textures of their surroundings, looking beyond conventional typographic sources. By engaging with locals and immersing themselves in the essence of Saigon's neighborhoods, they have uncovered stories and emotions that breathe life into their mixed-media creations.

The creative works differ not only in medium but also in their creative research approaches. Khánh explores the delicate balance between order and chaos at 218 Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Apartment, while Eve uncovers a profound sense of community within Bàn Cờ Market, echoing Nancy's discovery of a labyrinthine narrative beneath the small neighborhood of Xóm Chiếu. Some aim to interpret the experience of locality, such as Vivian’s transformation of Phạm Thế Hiển Street into a board game of life, or Lewis’s portrayal of the claustrophobic Hồ Thị Kỷ Market as a pulsating beast. Trân condenses Bình Thạnh District into a visual 'blur.' Other works distill the neighborhoods into philosophical musings: Tâm uses Bình Hưng Hoà Cemetery and its redevelopment plan as a metaphor for the death of identity, while Ngọc's exploration of 14 Tôn Thất Đạm Apartment speaks to perception bias and how it shapes our view of spaces.

From publication design to interactive installations, each piece reflects the spirit and soul embedded within the city's streets, moving beyond mere visual representation into a deeper cultural dialogue.

The venue, 3năm Studio, nestled in the heart of An Phú, District 2, Saigon, is a fitting space that resonates with the spirit of placemaking—allowing typographic work to live and intertwine with the fabric of the place and its community.
